Thank you for sharing! Could you share books you've read about how to skill effective, clear writing?
I'd recommend the book Writing Without Bullshit by Josh Bernoff.
I'd also recommend reading a lot. Books, by well-known authors. Notice the way sentences and thoughts are structured on the page.
Awesome read Curtis!
I try to follow point 2 (asking dumb questions) already for quite some time and it is one of the most important things IMO.
Thanks, Sandro! Same. It's super important. 😄
Thanks for such an inspiring post
Happy to write it, Anietie!
Thanks for taking the time to write this!
Happy to take the time and share, Corey. 😄
This is a lot curtis.Thank you
And thank you, for reading, Oni!
All these are great tips that as developers we shouldn't forget, thanks for sharing Curtis Einsmann
Happy to share, Eleftheria. Agree that it's easy to neglect the soft skills, which is why I wanted to write about them. 😄
Hey Curtis, I especially agree with the first and 11th. ;)
- Everyone should know that emails Always 'sound' and feel different from in-person comments, even if the words are the same. To me, it is especially important to take extra care to be polite. Bonus. The eleventh (to me) was 'Learn to write effectively.' Good writing is so difficult. Getting the tone correct is hard enough, much less not straying from the point.
All solid points!
Happy you enjoyed the 1st and 11th points in particular!
I do agree they go hand in hand. Much context is lost with writing. With teams increasingly going remote, it's important to check the tone of how you're writing is coming across.
As developers, these are surely some tips we need to never forget. Thanks for sharing this Curtis Einsmann . Also, the first point, exude kindness. I have experienced it and know what it is like.
Happy to share! I do agree the kindness aspect is the most important point.
Awesome article, Curtis! Thanks for sharing.
I have a question, though.
adding to your brag document
What is a brag document?
Cheers
Good question, Miguel.
It's a document where you can keep track of your accomplishments. It's useful to get visibility from engineering managers or mentors who have influence on your promotion.
Some useful things to keep track of:
- Code reviews where you shipped quickly
- STAR stories where you had business impact
- Metrics demonstrating your ability to perform at the next level
